Canada each year selects over 200,000 new immigrants. Independent Selected Workers form a large portion of this overall number. Currently, Canada is seeking qualified applicants in all occupations.

For independent applicants applying under the skilled worker program, there are a series of factors that are assessed for the purposes of determining an individual's likelihood of succeeding in settling in Canada. Each factor is allotted a maximum number of points.   

In order to qualify, you must attain 67 units out of a total possible 100 units. We have briefly listed below each of the factors considered by the Canadian Immigration Officer;
  

The Selection Factors  

Age ( Maximum 10 Units )
21 to 50 years - 10 units
subtract 2 points for every year over or under 50  

Education ( Maximum 25 Units )
Ph.D or Masters Degree  -   25 units
3 Year Post Secondary Educational credential, and a total of at least  15 years Full time studies   - or - Two or more University credentials at Bachelor Level - 22 Units 2 Year Post Secondary Credential ( other than University) with at least 14 years Full time Study - or - a two year bachelor credential with a total of 14 years full time study - 20 Units
1 Year post-secondary educational credential ( other then University ) with a minimum 13 years Full time study - or - a one year university credential at bachelor level and a minimum 13 years full time study - 15 Units
1 year post secondary credential ( non University with a minimum 12 years of full-time study - 12 units
High Scholl and a total of 12 years full time study - 5 units

Language Skills (English/French, Maximum 24 Units)
proficiency in first language  up to 16 units
second language up to 8 units

Experience (Maximum 21 units)
Four Years   - 21 Units
Three Years - 19 Units
Two Years    - 17 units
One Year      - 15 units

Arranged Employment (Maximum 10 units)  

Adaptability Maximum (10 units)
Spouse or Common-law partners education
3 units if spouse would qualify for 12 to 15 units under education criteria listed above
4 units if spouse would qualify for 20 to 22 units under education criteria listed above
5 units if spouse would qualify for 25 units under education criteria listed above
Previous Study in Canada - any period of study - 5 Units
Previous Authorized Work In Canada - any period of authorized work in Canada -   5 Units
Arranged Employment in Canada - 5 units
Family Relationship - 5 units

In addition to the above, you must also possess at least one year of work experience .
You also must meet the educational and licensing requirements for the chosen
occupation.
